NXT UK: a new era for British Wrestling

NXT UK : The New Era of British Wrestling

Recently WWE have held NXT U.K. Takeover Blackpool. The show was great with a very good opening match with Moustache Mountain vs  Grizzled Young Veterans, Finn Bàlor shockingly taking on his poorly made clone or as some call him Jordan Devlin and a phenomenal main event that both allowed Joe Coffey to look even stronger than he did before and make Pete Dunne look even more like the top guy of the brand. Finally at the end of the show Walter made his debut on NXT UK when he came out to signify that he wants to challenge Pete Dunne for his title. Any way this show was great at both displaying some of the best UK talent the company has to offer but also signify a new era in British Wrestling.
WWE is the biggest wrestling company in the world and having it display what I think to be one of the best wrestling scenes in the world is great. British Wrestling used to be huge around the 70s and 80s with World of Sport, many of the older British population would have watched and this started a hunger for wrestling in Britain. Around this time WWE became more and more popular and soon, like it did in America, became a wrestling superpower. This lead to death of World of Sport and started a dark period in British Wrestling. Whilst the scene wasn't dead it certainly was as popular as it used to be in this era however things started to pick up around the late 2000s and early 2010s and eventually we find ourselves here with the scene being the home for a new expansion by WWE. Due to this expansion attempt more attention has been put on British scene and its seen the return of World of Sport alongside the rise in popularity for companies like Progress and ICW.
Whilst the history of the British Indie scene is a lot more complicated than I’ve made it out to be the point still remains that the scene is moving into a new era and this era will be the biggest the scene has ever faced. The acts of WWE are directly related to this era as they've attempted to expand the scene and make it bigger overall. I believe that the scene will grow to rival that of the US and Japan. The scene faces an issue though as some of the biggest companies in it are controlled by WWE and I feel that this could lead to the scene being held back. We just need to wait and see how all of this turns out.
